Non-medicines

Non-medicine prescribing is an area that shows wide variation in prescribing compared to medicines. It is often identified as an area with opportunities for improvement.

There is scope for reduction in expenditure on non-medicine items such as wound dressings, stoma products and oral nutritional supplements. There is significant variance between boards on how non-medicines are governed and managed. We pulled together a cross-board group  that has developed a non-medicines governance handbook that pulled together best practice.

The handbook is intended to be a living document and will be amended as and when new material is submitted, we would be pleased to receive your feedback. We are also looking to publish links to best practice within Boards. If you have a link that you would like included, please forward and we will include on this page.

Feedback and links can be send to EPandT@gov.scot
